Introduced in 1990, the Friends of Singa (FOS) programme began with the purpose of cultivating desirable behaviours and values in students. FOS Secondary programme is a year-long programme that is open to secondary, special education schools, madrasahs, and international schools.

FOS started out in schools to cultivate desirable values and qualities in students and to champion kindness in the school community. Students from participating schools are tasked to identify issues and they must implement a kindness campaign on campus to promote kindness within their school and community. It is intended that at the end of the campaign, participants will recognize the importance of their role in informing and encouraging desired behaviours; therefore making a difference.

Friends of Singa (FOS) 2026 – Building a Kindness Culture Together
To foster a more gracious Singapore, the Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) inspires individuals to live out values of courtesy, kindness, and consideration.

Through the Friends of Singa (FOS) programme, students are empowered to become kindness ambassadors, role models who lead by example and spark ripple effects of care in their schools and communities.

This year, 2026, FOS projects will centre on four pillars of graciousness: CyberKindness, Neighbourliness, Inclusivity, and Multiculturalism.

Project proposals should focus on one of these themes, showing clear understanding and creative approaches to put kindness into action. By doing so, students not only carry out meaningful initiatives but also play a part in shaping a kindness culture that extends beyond the classroom into everyday community life.

By aligning projects to these themes, schools and students contribute directly to the holistic development of kindness values, addressing contemporary social challenges while reflecting the many dimensions of gracious living in Singapore.
The Four Pillars of Graciousness
CyberKindness / Online Graciousness
In today’s digital age, it is vital to be safe, responsible, and respectful online. SKM encourages netizens to model gracious behaviour through CyberKindness, positive peer influence, and being an Upstander rather than a bystander.

This includes practicing respectful communication, considerate behaviour, and positive engagement across digital platforms.
Neighbourliness
Neighbourliness is about building strong, caring, and connected communities. Small acts such as greeting neighbours, being mindful of quiet hours (10pm–7am), or celebrating festive occasions together can help nurture the kampung spirit.

It also means fostering trust, openness, and social cohesion across diverse groups, bridging gaps between citizens and non-citizens alike.
Inclusivity
An inclusive society values and respects every individual, regardless of differences. Inclusivity ensures that no one is excluded from daily life, and that shared spaces are welcoming and accessible.

By promoting compassion, empathy, respect, patience, and consideration, we strengthen bonds and create a community where everyone feels they belong.
Multiculturalism
Multiculturalism celebrates Singapore’s diversity, encouraging mutual respect, appreciation of different cultures, and shared experiences that unite communities.

By promoting cross-cultural understanding and collaboration, we can deepen bonds and enrich the collective Singapore experience.
